Church of the Storms


St. Winwaloe Church, also known as The Church of the Storms, may well be one of the most beautiful churches in Cornwall, and probably in England! It is the only church on a beach (Church Cove) in Cornwall. It dates back to the 1300s, along with its bell tower.

The church is a Small Pilgrim Place and is always open for visitors; it is a popular attraction.

Church services are held at 3PM on the second and fourth Sundays of the month.

    Hello - I am from N.Z. and I visited this amazing place in 2018. My English host told me that the church had been buried in sand for hundreds of years due to the storms and the rediscovered.
    Are you able to confirm this and can you add anything further - Thanks, Margaret

Poldark Filming at Gunwalloe

There was a little excitement in the village last night as many trucks and cars rumbled through. Because the road is a dead end at Church Cove, it was obvious something was going on. A quick internet search identified that the Poldark crew was filming in Charlestown this week. Two plus two makes four; surely they'd come to Gunwalloe for some more filming. Early this morning, more traffic through the village. I walked down to Church Cove, and sure enough there was an entire camp set up, people moving around, and filming taking place on Dollar Cove. Unfortunately I couldn't get too close, but it was fun to see the energy and hustle and bustle of everyone getting ready for some filming. Harriet (my dog) also thought it was curious to see some much action on an early November morning. Weather was cooperative too, despite the doom and gloom forecasts.

Gunwalloe Feast Day: March 3

Sunday March 3rd A fun afternoon and evening of activities to celebrate a very old village tradition. We will be raising money for: The Trussell Trust, Helston . Stop UK Hunger 3:00 pm - Service at the Church of the Storms Father Shane will lead this special service, to celebrate Gunwalloe feast day. The tradition of feast days is rooted in Christianity, so it’s a great way to begin our festivities. Father Shane will relate the stories of the feast day celebration, and the patron saint of our church, St Winwaloe. The service will last about 50 minutes. 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm - Singers at the Halzephron Inn Graham Jewel and his singing friends will lead the singing at the pub. You are encouraged to come down and enjoy some old Cornish songs, and join in, when you can. Light refreshments will be provided. 7:30 pm - Gunwalloe Feast Day Pub Quiz! £5 entry per person on a team, you’ll enjoy some fun, entertainment and food as you test your knowledge.
